“For as I was passing through and considering the objects of your worship, I even found an altar with this inscription; TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. Therefore, the One whom you worship without knowing, Him I proclaim to you: Acts 17:23 NKJV
The Athenians had long been known as very religious people. They built many altars to The Unknown god. They did not know the One True God. They hadn’t heard of Jesus. They created false gods and idols of their own design. The Athenians built many altars to many “gods”. They covered all the religious bases. Pretty smart cookies those Athenians. Too smart for their own good if you ask me! Adam and Eve at the fruit of the forbidden tree in part because it was desirable to make one wise. They turned their backs on the wisdom of the ages. They did gain knowledge. But to what end? They were cast out of the garden. Sin and death entered the world! The Apostles asked Jesus who was the greatest among them. Jesus replied, “Assuredly, I say to you, unless you are converted and become as little children, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven. Little children do not question a father’s wisdom. The look to him for protection and guidance. They receive a father’s love with delight. Simple pleasures are enough for a child who is loved and cherished. Do not question your Heavenly Father’s love. Receive the Father’s love with great delight. Look to Jesus for guidance and protection. Enjoy the simple pleasures of life. You are loved and cherished by the One True and Living God! And when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some mocked, while others said, “We will hear you again on this matter.” So Paul departed from among them. However, some men joined him and believed, among them Dionysius the Areopagite, a woman named Damaris, and others with them. Vs 32-34 Most of the philosophers scoffed at the Gospel. It made no sense to them. How could it. They considered themselves the seekers and keepers of deeper knowledge. They did not just sit around telling and hearing new ideas for fun. The philosophers shared new ideas because they thought they had greater knowledge than others. The were eager to listen to new ideas so they could argue for or against them. They were the intellectual elite of their time. Intellectualism was an idolatrous stronghold that separated them from the knowledge of God. Intellectualism is a stronghold separating people from relationship with Jesus today. People are sacrificing the love of God upon that altar today! Your Heavenly Father wants you to receive His Word as a little child. He wants you to receive His love revealed in Jesus as a little child. Jesus wants you to love the Father as only a child of God can. Jesus is the only way to the Father.
