Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; For You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me. Psalm 23:4 NKJV
Psalm twenty-three is an expression of David’s confidence in God’s grace.
David’s confidence in God’s grace is expressed by his understanding of God as the Shepherd of His people. As a boy David’s days were consumed with providing loving care and protection for his sheep.
David knew the depth of commitment a true shepherd has for the flock in his care. A shepherd loves his flock. Each little lamb ram and ewe was treasured. The welfare of his flock was vital to David’s own wellbeing.
For a season it seemed as if the world was becoming safer. The wall symbolizing hostility between the camps of east and west came down. Nations and people groups seemed to be co-operating for the common good.
Technology has transformed the world. Information can be accessed and processed instantly. The sinful nature of mankind has not changed. The world stage is a frenzy of wars and rumors of wars as nations and people groups seek to dominate others.
Genocide is waged under the guise of freedom and self-autonomy. The sleeping giant the bear and eagle rattle their sabers. Are we to live through another cold war? Will the fuse that ignites massive weapons of mass destruction be lit?
School shootings have become common. Our vocabulary has been transformed by an age of lawlessness. We have become familiar with words like gang related carjacking and going postal. Has the world gone mad? Yes, it all started in the Garden of Eden with Adam and Eve.
We walk through the valley of the shadow of death every day. How is it possible to do so without fearing the evil in our world? We must remember the Lord!
I caught a hummingbird. I held it in my hands. It lay there as if dead. I threw it up in the air and it flew away unharmed. I was so amazed. That little bird represented the favor and grace of God to me.
It may seem silly but every time I see a hummingbird I remember the Lord. I remember I am God’s favored child. I remember Jesus loves me. I remember Jesus is with me as I travel through the valley of the shadow of death!
Take a moment to consider what reminds you of Jesus. What helps you to remember you are God’s favored child? What reminds you of His great love for you? What reminds you that Jesus is with you as you travel through the valley of the shadow of death?
Turn of the news. Incline your heart to Jesus right now!
