Truly God is good to Israel, To such as are pure in heart. But as for me, my feet had almost stumbled; My steps had nearly slipped. For I was envious of the boastful, When I saw the prosperity of the wicked. Psalm 73 NKJV
The Psalmist tells us he was tempted to abandon the faith because of the pride of life and the lust of his flesh.
Their eyes bulge with abundance; They have more than heart could wish. Vs 7
The Psalmist exaggerates the state of ungodly people. He does not see them as needy.
In his eyes they are the rich and famous. They live a life of leisure and extravagance.
He says; there are no pangs in their death, they are not in trouble as other men, nor are they plagued as other men. Could this be true? Of course not!
The problem is not that other people have it better than the psalmist. He is not content with what he does have. He has eternal life!
My season of temptation came when I was making more money than ever before. I had plenty but wanted more. I saw how other people were living. I wanted to be like them. Why? The pride of life and the lust of my flesh!
I never abandoned my faith. I did stop living like a Christian.
My Pastor calls it living in practical unbelief. It is believing in God but not trusting Him enough to obey Jesus. It can happen when we seek the fool’s gold of life rather than the eternal rewards of the life giver!
But it is good for me to draw near to God; I have put my trust in the Lord God, That I may declare all Your works. Vs 28
The psalmist struggled but never surrendered. He was tempted but his faith prevailed. He drew near to God. He trusted the Lord more than his sinful desires and self doubt.
The psalmist declares the goodness and trustworthiness of God. He shares the work God did in his life with other people!
You may be struggling. Do not give up. Draw near to the Lord when you are tempted. Trust Him more than your sinful desires and self doubt. Declare the goodness and trustworthiness of God with other people. Tell them what Jesus has done for you!
Do not covet what others have. The pride of life is a favored lure of the devil. He has used it with great success to enslave God’s people. Do not be drawn into sin by casting your eyes upon sin. Feeding the flesh deprives the spirit!
You are an heir of eternal life. Keep your eyes on the prize. Jesus will return to take you out of this fallen world. Eternity with Jesus will be far greater than the sin of the world!
