We have heard with our ears, O God, Our fathers have told us, The deeds You did in their days, In days of old: You drove out the nations with Your hand, But them You planted; You afflicted the peoples, and cast them out. For they did not gain possession of the land by their own sword, Nor did their own arm save them; But it was Your hand, Your arm, and the light of Your countenance, Because You favored them. Psalm 44 NKJV
God’s people remember the mighty works He did for their forefathers. The memories of God’s great favor leads to grumbling and complaining about their circumstances.
God swore He would make Abraham a great nation. He promised Abraham’s son and grandson they would live in a land flowing with milk and honey. He promised to dwell with them and bless them from generation to generation.
The land was inhabited by people who worshiped false gods. They sacrificed their children to idols made of wood and stone. God drove them out of the land. He blotted out their names from the earth. He did not want the evil in their hearts to contaminate the world.
God set Israel apart. They were His people. He was their God. He promised to bless them. He did. They promised to worship obey and serve God. They failed. That led to a cycle of judgment punishment repentance and forgiveness that was repeated for generations.
A new generation looked back at what God did for Israel. They praised God. Praise turned into jealousy. They wanted God to look upon them with favor. They want to see God’s blessing with their eyes. They want to touch it with their hands. They wanted it now!
God never withdrew His hand of blessing from the children of Israel. They redefined it. They replaced relationship with ritual and grace with legalism. They turned their backs on the spiritual blessings of God by treating Him like an idol.
An idol is a man made god fashioned in our image and likeness. Offerings and sacrifices are given so that it will respond with favor and blessing. Idols are useless!
The God of heaven and earth created us to be loved by Him and to return His love. He is not an ATM. He is not a wishing well. The Lord is a God of blessing. He is a God who is longsuffering and merciful!
Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. There is substance in the things we hope for if our hope is in Jesus. There is evidence of the riches we have in Jesus even though much of it remains unseen.
Praise Jesus for the work He did in the lives of those who have gone before you. Praise Jesus for the work He is doing in your life today. Turn away from idols. They are useless. Give your heart to the Lord. God honors and blesses people who love and obey Jesus!
