But Jesus said to him, No one, having put his hand to the plow, and looking back is fit for the Kingdom of God. Luke 9:62 NKJV
One of the disciples said, “Lord I will follow you wherever you go.” And Jesus said to him, “Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head.”
Jesus said to another, “Follow Me.” But he said, “Lord, let me first go and bury my father.” Jesus said to him, “Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and preach the Kingdom of God.” And another also said, “Lord, I will follow you, but let me first go and bid them farewell who are at my house.”
Jesus was calling out disciples. They would be the first to follow Him and preach the Gospel. They would become leaders in the church and set an example as they followed Jesus. The Lord wanted them to know there would be a cost.
These men lived in a strict religious society. They would be rejected despised and treated like criminals. They would live on the road. Many would become martyrs for their faith. If they looked back with longing in their hearts they would be unfit to serve God!
A boy was born into a dysfunctional family. His parents divorced when he was very young. He grew up feeling abandoned and rejected by his father and unloved by his mother. He turned to drugs and alcohol to numb the pain.
He discovered that girls liked him. They gave him the attention he sought. He became sexually active at a young age. His life was marred by one night stands and broken relationships. They left him feeling empty and alone. His sin increased the pain.
The boy became a man and surrendered his heart to Jesus. Sins hold was broken. The Lord moved in miraculous ways. The grace of God changed his priorities. Today his greatest desire is to serve the Lord with all his heart!
When Jesus Lord spoke of letting the dead bury their own dead He was saying His disciples must have a different set of priorities than unbelievers.
No one having tasted the goodness of God can return to a life of sin and have peace. The passing pleasures of sin cannot compare to the love God pours out. No one can serve Jesus with one foot in the Kingdom of God and one in the cesspool of sin.
Let the dead in trespasses and sin deal with the issues of death and destruction. Serve the giver of life with every fiber of your being.
If you have put your hand to the plow in the fields of the Lord’s harvest do not look back to the unfertile land of selfish desires. The harvest is plentiful. Be among the faithful few who reap the rewards of their labor in the Lord!
