I am the rose of Sharon, And the lily of the valleys.
Like a lily among the thorns, So is my love among the daughters.
Song of Solomon 2:1-2 NKJV
The young lover refers to herself as a sweetly scented flower. Her beloved agrees. She is rare and precious. His love is so strong and true he only has eyes for her.
Years after my girlfriend and I separated we talked on the phone. She said, “You have such a high opinion of me.” I felt like something sweet and precious was restored.
Love changes everything! Love gives us hope when we are hopeless. It gives us strength when we are week. It gives us courage when we are fearful. We see the object of our love in ways others cannot. It changes the way we see and feel about ourselves.
Solomon’s love would not last. He cast it aside. He set his heart on sin. It set a veil before his eyes. In his old age Solomon declared, there is evil under the sun, all is vanity and a grasping after the wind.
The evil is in people’s hearts. A life of selfish pursuits is vanity. It is like trying to grab a handful of wind.
Like an apple tree among the trees of the woods, So is my beloved among the sons. I sat down in his shade with great delight, And his fruit was sweet to my taste. Vs 3
In the eyes of his love Solomon was rare and unique. He stood out and above all others. She was content to rest at his side. Peace and safety surrounded him. She craved his touch. It filled her heart. How pleasant and sweet his love was to her and hers to him.
It is amazing that such beautiful words could be written about the imperfect love between a man and woman. It is amazing that a man who began his reign over God’s people by acknowledging his need for the Lord could fail so miserably.
There is a love so perfect and sweet it changes heaven and earth!
When our hope is in the great lover of our souls we cannot be disappointed. We can draw strength from Him when we are weak. We can be encouraged when we are fearful. He changes the way we see the world and the people around us. He changes us!
Who is this great lover? His name is Jesus! You are rare and precious in His sight!
God’s love changes everything. It changes our hearts and lives when we respond to it. It changes the way He sees us when we receive it. God’s love changes our eternal destiny!
Sit down in God’s shade with great delight. Taste His fruit. Discover His opinion of you!
