But let all those rejoice who put their trust in You; Let them ever shout for joy, because You defend them; Let those also who love Your name be joyful in You. For You, O Lord, will bless the righteous; with favor You will surround him as with a shield. Psalm 5:11-12 NKJV
These verses conclude David’s prayer. He asked God to hear his prayer. He prayed against wickedness. He asked God to lead him into victory.
David asks God’s blessing and protection upon the righteous. He declares God will bless people who love Him and put their faith in the Lord!
The warrior king takes his focus off the forces of evil. He stops cursing the darkness. David turns his attention to the God of his salvation. He lets the light of his faith illuminate the darkness!
Sometimes I think we spend too much time cursing the darkness and not enough time letting the light of our faith shine through it!
We are surrounded by people who have grown accustomed to the darkness of the world. Our government supports and encourages sin. Many Christians believe our country has changed so dramatically it will never be the same. I believe it will never be the same.
Jesus did not come to lead a rebellion against Rome. It was a godless evil nation. Would Jesus have us foment a rebellion against our government? No, he would not!
Jesus told His disciples; “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.” That is not a suggestion. It is a command that we are to obey today!
Jesus is calling us to stand for righteousness today just as He did two thousand years ago. He is also calling us to love sinners just as He did two thousand years ago!
David asked God to let everyone who trusts Him rejoice and shout for joy because He defends us against all unrighteousness. He asked the Lord to let those of us who love Jesus be joyful in Him because He blesses the righteous and surrounds us as with a shield.
That is a prayer God is willing to answer! Will we let Him?
When God says He will defend us and with favor surround us as with a shield He is not just offering physical protection. Jesus will defend us from unrighteousness. If we trust Jesus we can have joy regardless of our circumstances or the environment we live in!
Do you trust the Lord? Do you love Him? If so you are righteous in God’s eyes!
Rejoice in the Lord. Jesus will bless you with favor. He will surround you as with a shield!
