Let all that you do be done in love. 1 Corinthians 16:14 NKJV
This verse is not a recommendation. It is a command!
God expects love to be the motivation for everything we do. God did not tell me this in a dream. He did not give me a vision. I was not visited by an angel. I read it in the bible!
This verse caused me to look at how I treat people. When I care for my wife do I do it begrudgingly or lovingly? Do I serve the Lord to satisfy my selfish desires or because I love Him?
Jesus sees straight into our hearts. Jesus knows the motivation for everything we do. Jesus is pleased when we serve Him because we love Him!
When we are motivated by love we can serve Jesus without fear of failure. We can speak the truth to people without fear of rejection when we are motivated by love.
Serving Jesus means serving people. We were created in the image and likeness of God. When we express our love for people we reflect His character to the world!
How can everything we do be motivated by love? By faith in Jesus!
When I am motivated by selfish desires I can put my faith into action by trusting God with those desires. The difference between being tempted to sin and acting on it is faith.
If I have a desire to gratify my selfish desires I acknowledge the sin. I do not try to hide it or ignore it. I confess it. I turn it over to the Lord. Trusting God to deal with it for me requires that I do not act on my sinful desires.
The same principle works when my motivation for serving God is something other than love. I confess my wrong motivation to Jesus. I trust Him to transform my heart. If I have difficulty loving someone my motivation for serving that person is my love for God.
The spiritual principle for doing everything in love is the same as living the Christian life. We must allow God to form the life of Christ in us. We cannot serve people in love without allowing Jesus to live His life through us!
We can express our love for God by trusting Him with everything we do today. Ask Jesus to fill your heart with love until it overflows. Ask Jesus to use you to show people how much He loves them.
Let everything you do today be done in love through faith in Jesus Christ!
