O God, why have you cast us off forever? Why does Your anger smoke against the sheep of Your pasture? Psalm 74 NKJV
The sanctuary was destroyed. God’s people cried out for deliverance from an evil nation!
The Lord delivered Israel from bondage in Egypt. They did not leave like escaping slaves. They marched off in victory. They took all the treasure they could carry. Egypt was devastated. Israel was jubilant. God was with them!
The Chaldeans swarmed down on Judah. They destroyed Jerusalem. They carried away the apple of God’s eye. The fierce anger of God was poured out on them. He removed His hand of protection. It must have seemed like the end of the world.
The destruction of Jerusalem and captivity of the people was prophesied before it happened. So was their return to the land God promised to them.
God judged His people. He punished them. He did not stop loving them.
Israel did not understand. Nothing in their theology could explain how a God who loved them so dearly could chasten them so severely. They did not understand how God could be with them in a time of such great devastation suffering and despair.
God kept His Word. Israel returned to the Land of Promise.
A beloved child walked off into a pit of evil. Chains of bondage secured him in the darkness. It was the death of innocence that broke his parents hearts the most. He saw things no one should ever see. He did things no one should ever do.
His parents saw what was happening. They knew where sin would lead the young man. They could not stop it!
Through the debilitating pain and paralyzing heart ache they held onto the promise that their child belonged to God. The battle for their son was the Lord’s. He would fight it. They positioned themselves in faith. They prayed and waited!
Years later that young man gave his heart back to Jesus!
Only God knows exactly why He sent Israel into captivity. Only God knows exactly why that family had to suffer such a heartbreaking season of suffering. I do know we cannot be confused by our personal theology. Jesus is God. We are not!
God is good. That does not mean bad things will not happen to us. We may feel like God has abandoned us at times. He will never leave us. Jesus will judge us when necessary. He will chastise us when He must. He will never stop loving us!
Life is hard. The winds of adversity blow on the just and the unjust alike. Position yourself in faith. Jesus fights for His beloved!
