When Jesus saw the crowds, He went up on the mountain; and after He sat down, His disciples came to Him, He opened His mouth and began to teach them, saying, “Blessed are the poor in Spirit, for theirs is the Kingdom of heaven. Matthew 5:1-3 NASB
What does it mean to be poor in spirit? Poor in spirit does not mean poor in finances.
Solomon was the wisest man who ever lived. He was also one of the wealthiest. He had hundreds of wives and concubines. He lived in royal splendor.
Solomon could have had anything he wanted anytime he wanted. And yet he said of life, “it is all vanity, it is a chasing after the wind.” Solomon’s soul was restless for more than he could attain in his own strength and wisdom, is yours?
While working in a prison I became overwhelmed with the needs of men in our program. I had a burning desire to help them. I was painfully aware I had so little to offer.
I am woefully inadequate as a father. I lack the wisdom and maturity to lead and guide my children. I’ve failed to love my wife as Jesus loves the church. I watch helplessly as people I love suffer in pain from one illness after another.
Jesus promised we would have tribulation in this life. Jesus has kept that promise. He also promised the poor in spirit will inherit the kingdom of God. What does that mean?
It means people who trust Jesus and long for more than this world can offer will be blessed with eternal joy in the age to come!
The world is under the control of Satan. That is why there is so much evil, pain and suffering today. That is why there is so much greed and corruption. Some people are at home in this world because it is their home.
This children of God are not at home in this world. We long for the day when Jesus will rule and reign in love and righteousness. We long for the day when there will be no more tears, trials or tribulation. We long for the day sin will not reign in our mortal bodies!
There are a growing number of people who are poor in spirit but do not yet know the Lord. There are people suffering from poverty, homelessness despair and bondage to sin. Jesus is calling us to open our mouths so He can speak to them today!
Rejoice and be thankful!
If your spirit longs for the riches of Christ you will inherit the Kingdom of God!
Open your mouth and let Jesus speak to you and through you!
