Then she called the name of the Lord who spoke to her, You-Are-the-God-Who-Sees; for she said, “Have I also seen Him who sees me?” Genesis 16:13 NKJV
God always intended for marriage to be between one man and one woman. Abraham heeded the advice of his wife. He had sex with her maidservant to produce an heir. Sarah was not responsible for Abraham having a child with Hagar, Abraham was.
Abraham’s decision brought division into his household. The bitterness between Sarah and her servant drove Hagar to flee into the wilderness. The Angel of the Lord found her by a spring of water. He said to her, “Hagar Sarah’s maid, where have you come from, and where are you going?”
She said, “I am fleeing from the presence of my mistress Sarah.” The Angel of the Lord told her to go back to her mistress and submit herself under her hand. God promised to bless her child and make him a great nation. Hagar obeyed. She returned to her Sarah.
Why did the Lord ask Hagar where she had come from and where she was going? It is not because He did not know. It is not because He was curious. When the Lord asks questions like this it is because He wants us to consider our circumstances.
Hagar was exploited. She was used by a barren mistress to produce an heir. Her lot in life was to serve a rich man’s wife. God appeared to her when she was pregnant and wandering in the desert. God protected her from harm and blessed her child.
Hagar did not know God’s name. The Lord knew Hagar’s name.
Hagar called Him the God who sees because He could see the child growing within her. He could see the circumstances of her life. God could see her future. He could see the outcome of every decision she would ever make. The Lord looked upon her with favor.
God sees you today. He sees you because He chooses to look upon you with favor. He sees you regardless of your financial or social status. He sees you as He created you to be. God sees you as the person you will be when He forms the life of Christ in you.
Jesus sees your future. He sees the outcome of every decision you will ever make. Jesus will bless you with incorruptible blessings that can never be taken away or lose value!
God told Hagar to return to her mistress and submit herself under Sarah’s hand. The Lord wants you to return to the lover of your soul and submit yourself under His mighty hand today!
If you submit yourself under the mighty hand of God one day you will see the One who sees you perfectly. You will see Jesus face to face in the beauty of His holiness!
