So Elihu, the son of Barachel the Buzite, answered and said: “I am young in years, and you are very old; Therefore, I was afraid, And dared not declare my opinion to you. I said, Age should speak, And multitude of years should teach wisdom.” Job 32:6-7 NKJV
Job stopped speaking. Elihu scolded Job’s friends for condemning but not correcting him.
Elihu listened to Job and his friends. He disagreed when Job declared himself righteous. He disagreed when his friends condemned job. He was angry when they did not rebuke Job for accusing God of treating him unjustly. Elihu had a lot to say. He waited.
In that culture a young man waited for his elders to speak before joining a conversation. Elihu showed more wisdom and patience than his elders.
Elihu scolded Job’s friends for their insensitive condemnation. Elihu scolded them for not reminded Job that the Lord is always merciful and just. He scolded Job for making accusations against the God who is all powerful all-knowing and ever present!
He who answers a matter before he hears it, It is folly and shame to him. Proverbs 18:13
More and more I see people so quick to speak they answer before others finish talking. I do it. You may as well. A person with wisdom listens to everything that is said before forming an opinion and responding. A person of wisdom chooses his or her words wisely.
I have heard it said we should only speak 10% of what we think. When we rush to judgment and spew out a verbal assault, we may say things we can never take back.
I have a history of expressing anger inappropriately. I taught anger management classes in a prison. What did I learn? The best way to deal with anger is to wait on the Lord. Jesus has great rewards in store for people who learn to wait on Him!
I make my living as a salesman. Selling is not about talking people into buying things. It is more about listening and offering solutions than hype and exaggeration.
Not all young people respect their elders. They do not all value the wisdom gained through experience and a long life. Not all elders are wise. A young person who respects elders and values the wisdom that comes from experience is wise. Elders who consider their words careful display the wisdom of humility and submission to Christ!
Elders, do you listen to what the young people in your life say? Youngsters, do you seek the wisdom of your elders? Are you learning to wait on the Lord in all things and for all things?
Bless people by listening when they speak. Listen to what the all-powerful, all-knowing, ever present God is saying to you today!
Wisdom is available to all who call on the name of Jesus. It is a gift from the Lord!
