Vindicate me, O Lord, For I have walked in my integrity. I have also trusted in the Lord; I shall not slip. Examine me, O Lord, and prove me; Try my mind and my heart. Psalm 26:1-2 NKJV
It sounds as if David is declaring himself sinless. He is not. He is declaring his sincerity of purpose and single hearted devotion to God.
David was not highly esteemed by God because he was sinless. The Lord spoke about David in unique terms because David did not allow anything to keep him from seeking after God, not even his sin.
David begins this psalm by asking the Lord to vindicate him. It means to clear someone of blame or suspicion. It can also mean to show or prove to be right. Some words with the same meaning are acquit, clear, absolve and exonerate.
How could David be sure the Lord wanted to vindicate him? By faith!
David never denied his sins failures and mistakes. He knew he would sin fail and make mistakes in the future. He also knew he would not slip into godlessness or unbelief, how? He trusted God. He knew the Lord would not allow anyone who trusted Him to fall!
David calls on the Lord to examine him, to try his heart and mind and see if there is wickedness in him. He asks God to demonstrate the truth. David is declared sinless and righteous through faith in the One who is sinless and righteous!
You and I are not sinless. Saying we are sinless is like calling God a liar. We can live our lives in sincerity of purpose and single-hearted devotion to God, how? By faith in the One who is faithful, Jesus!
David is our example of how to live in sincerity of purpose and single hearted devotion to God. David simply chose to seek God regardless of his circumstances.
David sought God on his bed in the morning before the sun came up. Sometimes I pray in bed before I start my day. Sometimes I just take a minute to say good morning to Jesus before I get up.
David turned to the Lord at night before the sun went down. I always turn to the Lord before I go to bed at night. Sometimes I pray with my wife. Sometimes I just a take a minute and incline my heart to Jesus before I go to bed.
God has me write these devotionals so I can focus on His Word and practice listening to His voice. What ways does God draw you into His Word? How does He get your attention so He can speak to you?
Don’t let anything keep you from seeking Jesus and drawing near Him. When you fail make mistakes or sin ask Jesus to vindicate you. Trust the Lord to clear you of wrong doing absolve your sin and exonerate you of guilt. Jesus is trustworthy!
