Listen to counsel and receive instruction, That you may be wise in your latter days. Proverbs 19:20 NKJV
As a drug and alcohol counselor to prison inmates I spoke a great deal about denial. Denial is present whenever a person is caught up in sin. Denial is not just deceiving ourselves or other people. Denial is not just denying we have a problem.
Denial is self-deception that we can continue to live a sinful lifestyle without experiencing the consequences of our sin.
When we cut ourselves off from Godly counsel we can easily fall into deception and denial. There is a reason the Lord tells us not to forsake the gathering of the brethren. God never intended for us to live out the Christian life alone.
God scatters spiritual gifts among us so we can grow in grace and knowledge of Jesus. The Lord gives some of us the gift of Godly counsel to bless and protect His people.
One of the saddest pictures I have ever seen is the cover of a time magazine article about elderly drug addicts. Some people continue in sin well into old age contrary to God’s will for their lives!
None of us is perfect. We all make mistakes. All of us have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. Jesus expects us to learn from our mistakes. He expects us to humble ourselves and receive Godly counsel, so we do not repeat patterns of sin into old age!
Those of us who have some years under our belts know they roll by incredibly fast. It seems like just yesterday I was a teenager. I am now a senior citizen!
I pray God will not leave me to myself. I pray that I will not lead my children away from Jesus. I pray that I lead them to Jesus by the way I live. I pray that in my old age I will be a source of Godly wisdom for my family not a source of pain and embarrassment.
When we separate ourselves from the Body of Christ we are easy prey for the enemy of our souls. We all have blind spots. There are areas of our lives where we need others to help us make correction. There are areas of our lives where we have walked into error.
We must repent before the Lord and begin to walk along the path Jesus has chosen for us. If we humble ourselves to receive Godly counsel from people who love us, and the Lord, Jesus will give us the wisdom we so desperately need to live in a fallen world!
Jesus never rejected anyone when He lived among us! Jesus points out the things that separate us from Him! Jesus loves us! Jesus wants us to turn to Him for all things!
Jesus wants to impart wisdom to us in our old age. Jesus wants us to share that wisdom with the people He loves. Receive Godly counsel from the Word of God (Jesus Christ) today and every day!
