Knowing that whatever good anyone does, he will receive the same from the Lord, whether he is slave or free. Ephesians 6:8 NKJV
Children are instructed to obey their parents. Fathers are told not to provoke their children. Jesus speaks to slaves and slave masters, why? Slavery created a class distinction. It separated people and brought division between them.
People with servants and slaves were the elites of society. Slaves were the have-nots of society. Jesus tells slaves to obey their masters and masters not to mistreat their slaves. What is He really saying?
God holds all of us to the same standards regardless of status, position, race or color. Jesus is not pleased when we say we love Him and look down on His people. God expects us to treat people with the same love and care we want to receive from Him!
The Body of Christ is made up of many people with different personality traits, customs and habits. People come in different colors, shapes and sizes. There is great diversity in the Body of Christ. We are all of the same Spirit. The Spirit of Jesus reigns in us!
Jesus does not want us to focus on things that separate us. Jesus wants us to focus on things that bring unity to the Body of Christ.
We may feel like there are people we cannot have fellowship with. We can fellowship with all of God’s people regardless of our differences. We can love and bless each other knowing it pleases the Lord!
Jesus did not condemn sinners. He condemned people who believed they were sinless. Pride was the sin of Satan. When we look down on others we condemn ourselves. Jesus wants us to love and honor Him by loving and honoring each other!
Loving Jesus is easy for me. I love the Lord because He first loved me. It is not as easy for me to love people. I can be critical and judgmental of the people I should love and care for. I am easily angered by the people I should be praying for.
Strife, conflict and abuse were common in my family. I was bullied and bullied others. My father was a two-fisted bar room brawler. My mother repeated the abuse and neglect that were inflicted on her. There was open hostility between my step-father and I.
How can I retrain my heart and mind to be a lover of people? I do not have to. Neither do you. I only need to remember, that whatever good I do I will receive the same from Jesus, so will you. We can love people because the Spirit of Jesus resides in our hearts!
God sees everything. Jesus is pleased when you bless His people. Your service to the Body of Christ is above all else service to God!
Serve the Lord of heaven and Earth today. Serve Jesus by loving His people!
