His foundation is in the holy mountains. The Lord loves the gates of Zion more than all the dwellings of Jacob. Glorious things are spoken of you, O city of God! Selah Psalm 87 NKJV
From one man who had the faith to believe and trust Him God raised up a nation. He poured out His love on them. He gave them a land that would be their inheritance forever.
The Lord sent a king with a heart after His to capture Jerusalem and set up his throne. It became the Great City of God. It was the place where Israel gathered together to worship the One True God!
Why was Jerusalem so special to God? Why is it so precious in His eyes today? What is the significance of Jerusalem to our future?
Jerusalem was previously known as Salem. Jesus made a pre-incarnate appearance as the King of Salem. The word Salem means peace. Jesus Christ is the Prince of Peace. God attached His Name and Authority to the Great City of Jerusalem!
Jerusalem is the place where God chose to put His temple. It was the center of life for the people He chose to love and cherish. Jerusalem was special to God because the people who lived there were special to Him!
Today Jerusalem is a stumbling block for the nations. Jews and Arabs are willing to kill and be killed to win control of it. It is a focal point of the battle between good and evil.
God longs to gather the inhabitants of the Great City to Himself. He weeps when His people suffer. He is grieved by the hatred and violence. His love for the people of Jerusalem has not grown cold. His commitment to them has not wavered.
Then I, John, saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. Revelation 21:2
And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.” Revelation 21:4
Jerusalem was always a shadow of what is to come. Today as in former times it is filled with pain and sorrow. The New Jerusalem will be filled with the glory of God. Our worship will be magnified by the holiness of our perfected bodies when we gather there.
In my favorite movie a boy is separated from his parents by war. He is sent to a prison camp. His days are filled with the activities of survival. In the final scene he is reunited with his parents. He embraces his mother, closes his eyes and rests.
When we join God in the New Jerusalem we will rest from the activities of survival in this fallen world. I am going to be there! Will you?
