In those days John the Baptist came preaching in the wilderness of Judea, and saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand!” For this is he who was spoken of by the prophet Isaiah, saying: “The voice of one crying in the wilderness: Prepare the way of the Lord; Make His paths straight.” Now John Himself was clothed in camel’s hair; with a leather belt around his waist; and his food was locusts and wild honey. Matthew 3:1-4 NKJV
John was chosen to serve God at a specific time in His-story. He served the Lord in a specific way. God created you to serve Him in a specific way at this time in His-story! John burst on the scene after four hundred years of prophetic silence. He was sent by God to announce the arrival of His Son to the World. Why had the Lord been silent for so long? Why did He wait so long to send Jesus? The Lord called to me when I was sixteen years old. I felt Him tugging at my heart. Sin was crouched at my door. I could have turned from it. I did not. I embraced it. At just the right time there was a knock on my door. A stranger came into my home. He called me to repent and turn to Jesus. He said the kingdom of God was here now. God sent him to announce the arrival of His Son in my life. I have never been the same! John was a peculiar man. His clothes were made of camel’s hair. He wore a leather belt around his waist. He ate locusts and wild honey. It seems he may have lived in the dessert. I imagine he had wild un-kept hair and piercing eyes. It was not just John’s appearance and diet that made him different. He opposed the religious authorities, traditions and legalism that placed heavy burdens on people. He spoke out against the sin and corruption of the culture. John spoke of the One who would come to baptize with the Holy Spirit and fire! We are peculiar people today. It is not the way we dress or the food we eat that makes us strange. It is the way we live. We trust in an unseen God to deliver us from a world others embrace! We call people to repent and speak of a kingdom that cannot be seen through eyes of flesh. We identify with the death, burial and resurrection of an unseen God. We call on the Holy Spirit to fan the flames of faith in our hearts. God’s timing is always perfect! He sent John to prepare the way for Jesus at the perfect time! He sent Jesus to the earth in the fullness and perfection of time! God is calling you today. He is calling you to cry out to the people in your world. What will you say to them? Tell them to turn from the sin and corruption of our culture. Tell them the kingdom of God is at hand. Tell them Jesus wants them to join Him in the kingdom to come! http://www.joyfor2day.com https://twitter.com/JoyFor2day #Joyfor2daydailydevotional
