May the Lord answer you in the day of trouble; May the name of the God of Jacob defend you; May He send you help from the sanctuary, And strengthen you out of Zion; May He remember all your offerings, And accept your burnt offering sacrifice. May He grant you according to your heart’s desire, And fulfill all your purpose.
We will rejoice in your salvation, And in the name of our God we will set up our banners! May the Lord fulfill all your petitions. Now I know that the Lord saves His anointed; He will answer him from His holy heaven with the saving strength of His right hand. Some trust in chariots, and some in horses; But we will remember the name of the Lord our God. They have bowed down and fallen; But we have risen and stand upright. Save, Lord! May the King answer us when we call. Psalm 20 NKJV
When I started writing these devotions my heart was full of God’s Word. I was overflowing and overcome with the Lord’s goodness and mercy. I needed an outlet to share what Jesus was doing in my life. I cried out in praise of God!
Jesus wants to save everyone. God does not want anyone to perish. He wants all people to come to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ.
Jesus wants to save us from the bondage of trusting in our own strength and resources. Jesus wants to save us from eternal separation from the Father. Jesus wants us to live in the safety of His love forever!
When we cry out to Him for help God answers from heaven. Jesus saves us with His mighty right arm!
What will Jesus save us from? He will deliver us from the slavery of sin. He will deliver us from evil so we can live in the freedom of His good and perfect plan and purpose!
Remember the name of the Lord. His name is faithful and true! His name is a strong tower! There is salvation in the mighty name of Jesus! He will lift you up and stand you on your feet when you have fallen. Jesus is moved to action by His love for you!
The Children of Israel stood before the Lord in victory. They gave God the glory. He was with them. He defended them. God revealed His love in a practical way that impacted their lives. As the leader of God’s people David stood up and repeated their prayer!
God gives us leaders after our own hearts. If we hunger for righteousness others will follow. Our nation will be blessed. If we wallow in sin it will spread to the people around us. Our leaders will deny the Lord. Our world will spiral farther down into the darkness of ungodliness.
We live in a world dominated by sin. It is controlled by evil. If we trust Jesus we can live in victory over sin death and every other form of evil!
This world is not our home. Eternity awaits. Seek Jesus. Jesus saves people from evil!
The heavens declare the glory of God; And the firmament shows His handiwork. Psalm 19:1 NKJV
The heavens declare the glory of God, how? As we explore creation we realize how limited our knowledge really is.
As we walk through a doorway of discovery we find that beyond lie more doorways of discovery. We walk through one of those doorways only to discover that beyond each doorway lay countless doorways of discovery we could potentially walk through.
Only an infinite God with unlimited power and creative ability could have created such complexity. Only God could have set in place the natural laws that govern our universe. Only God could create the dolphin and the whale, the hummingbird and the flamingo, you and me.
It is inconceivable that the universe could have been created by random chance. It is silly to believe that such complex creatures could have evolved by natural selection.
Jesus created the heavens and the earth. Jesus created us so He could love us.
I looked up into the night sky. I cried out Lord you created all this. You hung the stars in the sky. You call them all by name. I know you are able to deliver your people. You can bring healing and restoration where there is pain and brokenness. You can turn mourning into celebration. You can bring beauty from ashes. Only you can mend my broken heart. You can use the memory of my pain to bless other people.
Jesus loves you! Your problems, circumstances and needs are not too great for Him. He spoke the universe into existence. He can deliver you from sorrow and hardship.
Jesus spoke the universe into existence. He can bring transformation and healing into your life. He can bring healing and transformation into the lives of the people you love!
Look up into the night sky. Behold God’s handiwork. Look into the faces of people God delivered from bondage. Behold His glory. The heavens and the Earth contain the handiwork of Almighty God!
True science is based on observation and reproduction. Science has become a religion practiced by people puffed up with pride. They discard the puzzle pieces that do not fit their world view. They fill the void with what they want us to believe.
Creation has a Creator. His name is Jesus!
I will love You, O Lord, my strength. The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer; My God, my strength, in whom I will trust; My shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold. I will call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised; so shall I be saved from my enemies. Psalm 18:1-3 NKJV
David is responding to God’s marvelous love.
David’s early years were spent protecting and providing for his sheep. He put himself between them and deadly predators. He lived with them. His presence made them feel safe and secure. David’s relationship with his sheep mirrored his relationship with God.
God was David’s strength all the days of his life. The Lord was with David when he protected his sheep from wild animals. Those encounters prepared him for battle with Goliath. David killed the great man of war and led Israel to victory over the Philistines.
David wrote of the loving-kindness and grace of God. He experienced God’s grace and loving-kindness in the years of solitude and communion with the Lord. His tender care for his sheep reflected God’s loving care for him.
David experienced the mercy and forgiveness of God. He received God’s forgiveness without abusing the Lord’s mercy.
David used words and terms associated with war when describing his relationship with God. He knew it was the Lord who gave him victory over his enemies.
In his strength weapons tactics and the natural fortifications on the field of battle David saw the hand of God. He knew the best way to go into battle was obedience and faith in God.
We may never have the kind of enemies David had. We are surrounded by them as surely as David was!
In the unseen realm the forces of evil wage war against our souls. The world system eats away at our faith in Jesus one bite at a time. Our spirit seeks to soar with God while our sinful nature weighs us down. The devil waits in ambush as we live in faith for Jesus!
The best way for us to go into battle today is obedience and faith in God!
Has God’s love impacted you the way it impacted David? If not seek the solitude where you can best communion with Him. Have you learned to receive God’s forgiveness without abusing His mercy? Take the time to thank God for His forgiveness and mercy.
Do you give God the glory for your greatest victories? You should. It is because of God’s love and mercy that you have accomplished all you have done!
Respond to the Lord’s marvelous love the way David did. Live your life by faith in Jesus one day at a time. Tell other people about God’s grace and loving-kindness!
Hear a just cause, O Lord, attend to my cry; Give ear to my prayer which is not from deceitful lips. Let my vindication come from Your presence; Let Your eyes look on the things that are upright. Psalm 17 NKJV
David pours out his soul to God. There is no deception in his heart or words. He is confident his request is just and right. David makes a claim of righteous. It is not based on good works or wisdom. It is based on relationship with the Lord.
Pour your soul out to Jesus. Be honest with Him. There is nothing you cannot say to the Lord. If you pray in faith your request will be just and upright. Your righteousness is not based on good works or wisdom. It is based on your relationship with Jesus.
I have called upon You, for You will hear me, O God; Incline Your ear to me, and hear my speech. Show Your marvelous loving-kindness by Your right hand, O You who save those who trust in You from those who rise up against them. Vs 6-7
David believed God came close to hear when he spoke. He stood in awe of the tender care and loving-kindness God lavishes on people who love and trust Him. David looked to God for deliverance from his enemies even though he had been a man of war all his life.
God hears even the unspoken prayers of your heart. He draws near when you offer up worship and praise. Jesus lavishes tender care and loving-kindness upon people who love and trust Him today. He saves us from the evil that rises up against us today.
Turn away from your unbelieving past. Do not rely on your own strength and wisdom. Look to God for deliverance from the enemies of your soul!
As for me, I will see Your face in righteousness; I shall be satisfied when I awake in Your likeness. Vs 15
David knew that evil often prospers for a season. He contrasts the short season of pleasure offered by sin with the eternal life of the righteous.
David knew he would stand before God one day. It was the desire of his heart. He spoke prophetically when he declared he would see the Lord’s face in righteousness and awake in God’s likeness!
Don’t settle for the temporary pleasures of sin. Make dwelling in God’s presence the desire of you heart. In eternity our worship will not be hindered by your sinful nature. Your joy will be unbridled and complete when you love the Lord just as He loves you!
Don’t curse the darkness that surrounds you. Jesus will deliver you from evil if you make Him the desire of your heart. Pray for the lost the lonely and the brokenhearted. God will hear you. Jesus will reveal His loving-kindness to them by saving them!
Focus on the things that are good holy and upright. Keep your eyes on Jesus!
Preserve me, O God, for in You I put my trust. O my soul, you have said to the Lord, You are my Lord; My goodness is nothing apart from You. As for the saints who are on the earth, they are the excellent ones, in whom is all my delight.
Their sorrows shall be multiplied who hasten after another god; their drink offerings of blood I will not offer, nor take up their names on my lips.
O Lord, You are the portion of my inheritance and my cup; You maintain my lot. The lines have fallen to me in pleasant places; yes, I have a good inheritance.
I will bless the Lord who has given me counsel; my heart also instructs me in the night seasons. I have set the Lord always before me; because He is at my right hand I shall not be moved.
Therefore my heart is glad and my glory rejoices; my flesh also will rest in my hope. For You will not leave my soul in Sheol, Nor will You allow Your Holy One to see corruption. You will show me the path of life; in your presence is fullness of joy; at Your right hand are pleasures forevermore. Psalm 16 NKJV
These are such beautiful words it is hard to believe they were written by a man. David was greatly blessed by God. The Lord referred to David as a man after His own heart.
When the Ark of the Covenant was brought into Jerusalem David removed his kingly garments. They represented pride and self-reliance. He danced before the Lord with inexpressible joy. David’s love for God and commitment to the Lord was strong and true.
David committed a great sin by abusing his power and authority to satisfy his fleshly desires. When we read the things David wrote we see a man who was overcome by the goodness and mercy of God before his sin and after.
David’s love and commitment for God was so overwhelming He could write and speak such beautiful words as these!
The Lord wants us to know what David knew. His loves for us is unconditional and everlasting. He wants us to have the same love and commitment for God David had.
The Lord places great value on His relationship with us. No power on the earth below or in heaven above can stop Jesus from holding out His hand of love and mercy to us.
God created us to love Him and be loved by Him. He created us to live with Him in the Sonlight of His love. No power or created thing will prevent Jesus from showering His great love upon us!
Will you choose to receive God’s love today? The Lord has already made a way for you to spend eternity basking in the Sonlight of His love. The doorway that leads to the presence of God is Jesus Christ.
Remove the false garments of pride and self-reliance. Choose to live with Jesus and for Jesus today. Surrender your heart and life to the Lord one day at a time. Choose to live with Jesus throughout eternity. Enjoy the good pleasure of Almighty God forever!
Lord, who may dwell in your tabernacle? Who may dwell in Your holy hill?
He who walks uprightly, And works righteousness, And speaks the truth in his heart;
He who does not backbite with his tongue, Nor does evil to his neighbor,
Nor does he take up a reproach against his friend; In whose eye a vile person is despised, But he honors those who fear the Lord; He who swears to his own hurt and does not change; He who does not put out his money at usury, Nor does he take a bribe against the innocent. He who does these things will never be moved. Psalm 15 NKJV
These verses describe people who lived in biblical times. Some of them are in eternity with the Lord. Some of them are not. All of them were sinners. Is that fair?
We should not expect fairness from God. We can expect justice and mercy from Him. We can receive God’s grace and forgiveness through faith in Jesus Christ!
Fairness is even handedness or being treated the same and equal. God does not treat everyone the same. He looks deep into our hearts. He sees things no one else can. Our Heavenly Father gives each of us what we need when we need it to live for Him!
Abraham committed the same sins more than once. Jacob was a liar and a thief. Peter was impulsive and double minded. Paul was a blasphemer and a murderer. Rahab was a prostitute. They learned to trust God with their lives. That is true faith!
Jesus wants us to trust Him to mold us and shape us into the people He created us to be!
God does not want us to think we can be good and righteous on our own. Jesus is the author and finisher of our faith. Faith in Jesus Christ makes us righteous!
I carried around a backpack full of disgraceful titles. I was a drug addict, a liar, a thief and a womanizer. I broke the hearts of my wife children and parents. Today I am called by a different name. I am the beloved of God!
You may be carrying around the baggage of past sins. Toss it aside. If Jesus is your Lord and Savior you have a new name. You are God’s beloved!
If you have been trying to earn God’s favor stop trying so hard. Let Jesus do the transforming work He wants to accomplish in your life. Trust Jesus. He is trustworthy!
Jesus wants us to be yoked together with Him so we will not be moved. He wants us to trust Him to carry us into eternity. Jesus wants to bless us with His love forever!
The bible tells us than no one is righteous. Everyone sins. Perfection is not the hallmark of a Christian. Holiness is not a standard we can achieve in our own effort. We don’t have to!
Jesus took your sins away at the cross. Don’t give them back to Him! In the Father’s right hand are righteousness mercy and grace. Receive them through faith in Jesus!
The fool has said in his heart, “There is no God.” They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none who does good.
The Lord looks down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there are any who understand, who seek God. Psalm 14:1-2 NKJV
Once again David focuses on the depravity of mankind and the goodness of God, why?
Israel was confronted by evil forces seeking their destruction. Nations whose forefathers turned their backs on the living God to serve idols and demons opposed them. Evil was not a concept or theological doctrine to David, it was reality.
The conflict between the sinful nature of man and the goodness of God is evident in David’s life. It took place in his heart and mind!
The man with a heart after God’s struggled with sin just as you and I do.
David’s love for God moved him to write and sing with beauty and compassion. It stirs the hearts of multitudes.
David was a fierce warrior for the glory and honor of God. He gave his life over to the service of his people. He was a man’s man but always saw himself as a lamb in God’s sheepfold.
David committed adultery with one of the women he served. He killed one of his soldiers to hide his sin. When he disobeyed God the children Israel were punished. God did not allow David to build a temple for the Lord because he spilled blood.
The world is full of fools who deny the existence of God. They are corrupt. They commit abominable works of evil. Are we any better than them?
We are just as guilty of denying God at times. We deny the Lord when we stick our toes into the cesspool of sin to test the waters. We deny the Lord when we base our theology on feelings and emotions or circumstances rather than the Word of God!
The forces of evil that war against our souls are no less real than they were in David’s time. The greatest battles we fight will be in our hearts and minds!
God is looking down from heaven. He is looking to see if any of us seek Him. He is looking to see if any of us understand that He loves us. He is looking to see if any of us understand that He wants our love!
David won his battle. He is in the presence of the Lord. Will you win your battle of faith? Where will you spend eternity?
Turn your back on everything that wars against your soul. Seek Jesus today!
But I have trusted in Your mercy; my heart shall rejoice in Your salvation. I will sing to the Lord, Because He has dealt bountifully with me. Psalm 13:5-6 NKJV
David begins this Psalm by asking, How long, O Lord? Will you forget me forever? How long will You hide Your face from me? Have you ever wondered if God has forgotten you? Have you ever felt like God is hiding His face from you?
David wandered into practical unbelief. But he did not camp there. He trusted in God’s mercy. David rejoiced in his salvation. He sang songs of love and devotion to the Lord!
Have you trusted in God’s mercy? Does your heart rejoice in the salvation of the Lord? Will you sing to Jesus today?
The blessing of sending out these messages is it gives me an opportunity to share what God has done in my life. When we meditate on the great and mighty things God has done in our lives we are encouraged in our faith.
In 1993 I was arrested. God intervened in my life at that critical time. He used my sin to bring me to faith in Jesus Christ. Over the years I have experienced the mercy of God in miraculous ways. Jesus has taught me to trust in His great mercy.
The day I received salvation a great burden was lifted from my soul. I cried tears of joy. My soul was cleansed. I began to see people and the world in new and different ways. God began to show me things in miraculous ways!
I have wavered off into practical unbelief. I’ve tripped and fallen. I have hardened my heart. God in his great mercy renewed the joy of my salvation. My heart rejoices in the joy of my salvation today. Jesus gave me the faith I needed when I needed it.
I sang to Jesus today. I will sing to Jesus tomorrow. I may not sing out loud. I will sing with the voice of an angel in my heart. I will sing to Jesus out of the depths of my heart because my God has dealt bountifully with me.
God has never failed to provide in my time of need. Jesus met every one of my needs because He knows exactly what I need when I need it!
God wants to do great and mighty things in your life. He wants to use you to do great and mighty things in other people’s lives. Jesus wants to use you to pour out healing and restoration on people who need Him.
Trust in God’s mercy. Remember the joy of your salvation. Sing to Jesus in your heart. The Lord will give you what you need when you need it, why? Because He deals bountifully with people who set their love and devotion upon Him!
Set your love and devotion on upon the Lord of your salvation. Jesus will pour out His bounty and blessing upon you!
The words of the Lord are pure words, Like silver tried in a furnace of earth, Purified seven times. You shall keep them, O Lord, You shall preserve them from this generation forever. Psalm 12:6-7 NKJV
David is destitute of human comfort. He craves help from God. He seeks the Lord’s judgment on wicked people.
David knew the pain of loneliness. He experienced the sting of betrayal. The man with a heart after God had many enemies.
Saul wanted to take David’s life. His first wife despised him. David’s son led a rebellion against him. Nations made war with Israel a personal battle against David.
David held on to the truth of God’s Word regardless of his circumstances. If David had judged God for his hardships and trials he would be known as the double hearted man!
Once again David begins a Psalm by crying out for help against evil. He lived in a world dominated by ungodly people. David was a man of war from his youth but knew he could not fight in his own strength. The king needed God to fight his battles for him.
David won his greatest victories when he was out numbered and overmatched, when it was obvious he could not be victorious in his own strength. His defeats came when he went out in his own strength or disobeyed God’s commands.
Do you know the pain of loneliness? Have you experienced the sting of betrayal? Do you feel like some of the people you love despise you? Maybe your children have rebelled against your teaching and instruction?
You are not alone. Jesus knows exactly how you feel!
Sometimes I feel like I have been a man of war since my youth. I have never been in a conventional war. I do feel like war has been waged against me. That is because we live in a world dominated by ungodly people.
I have experienced the greatest victories when it seemed like all was lost. I suffered my greatest defeats when I was arrogant and overconfident, trying to succeed in my own strength and wisdom or disobeying God’s will for my life!
We must hold on to the truth of God’s Word. We can’t focus on our circumstances. We must learn not to judge our relationship with God by our relations with other people. They will let us down. Jesus never will!
This world is not our home. We live behind enemy lines. Do not be fearful. Do not worry. The words of Almighty God are true. They are more precious than fine silver. Nothing can stop Jesus from keeping His promises to us!
God has preserved His word throughout the generations of man. Jesus is the Living Word of God. He is faithful and true. Put your faith in Jesus and you will persevere!
The Lord is in His holy temple, The Lord’s throne is in heaven; His eyes behold, His eyelids test the sons of men. Psalm 11:4 NKJV
God’s eyelids test the sons of men. What does that mean?
God does not have eyes. He does not have eyelids. Does He ever stop searching our hearts? Does He ever stop watching over us and protecting us? Are there things that are hidden from God’s sight?
God never stop searching our hearts. He never stops watching over us. Nothing is ever hidden from the Lord’s sight. Jesus never stops protecting us.
God will allow us to feel like He is not watching over us. We will experience seasons when we feel like He is not protecting us. There will be times when we seek the Lord and feel like He is far from us. We may even think God does not know what we are doing.
When the Lord ushered me into His Kingdom I could not doubt Him. He spoke to me in dreams, through His Word, other people and the circumstances of life. I told people God was alive. It was an amazing season of growing in the Lord.
The Lord is testing us with His eyelids. We are in a season of trial and hardship. My wife suffers from one illness after another. Our sons walked away from the freedom of relationship with Jesus. They surrendered to sin. They are held captive by its grip.
Where is the Lord? He is in His holy temple. His throne is established in Heaven. He reigns supreme over creation. Jesus sees all things. He knows all things.
God searches hearts and minds looking for men and women who believe His Word. He tests people with His eyelids looking for men women and children who choose to walk by faith in Jesus!
Ask Jesus to give you the faith to live for Him today. When the season of testing has ended the Lord will rejoice over you with singing!
I wrote these words four years ago. Seasons of trial and adversity have come and gone. We frolicked in the Son shine of restoration when our prodigal returned. Our hearts sang with the joy of the Lord when our son received and returned our love and adoration!
The circumstances of life do not change God’s character increase His blessings or detract from His loving nature!
The Lord is in His holy temple when the rains fall. He is also there when the Son shines. God’s throne is in heaven regardless of what takes place on planet earth. Jesus sees all things. He knows all things. His eye lids test the sons of men for our good and His glory!
Jesus won the victory over sin and death so that you can be victorious over them!
Joyfor2day daily devotional goes out over the internet to thousands of people all over the world five days a week
